Foetal Sexing
This is very much a niche market generally appealing to Seed Stock Producers although some of our commercial breeders are using this technology.
Seed stock producers, when marketing and selling surplus female stock, can add considerable value when the sex of the unborn calf is known. Also knowing the sex of the calf can sometimes assist in determining which cows are to be retained or culled. For some clients it has been beneficial to split cows into calving groups of bulls and heifers to avoid early breeding problems when weaning late and to assist management.
Determining the sex of the unborn calf can be achieved between 60 and 100 days of gestation. Prior to this the foetus is not developed enough and after this time it descends too deeply within the uterus to be able to determine the sex.
There is a small percentage of pregnancies which can be difficult or sometimes impossible to determine the sex. Generally we are able to determine the sex of 95% of the pregnancies scanned within this 'time window'.
Pricing for this service is very much a one off arrangement depending on the cow numbers, travel, etc.
Planning needs to be done well in advance so early bookings are essential.
