Beef Cows
Pregnancy testing cows using ultrasound is a straight forward process. New clients are always surprised by how 'minimal' the stress on the cows, when compared to a manual preg test.
The cost of using ultrasound is comparible to a manual preg test, and often with larger numbers the cost per cow is less due to more efficient throughput. This makes it very cost effective in terms of employing labour and the time cattle spend in the yards.
A basic preg test to identify pregnant and empty cows can be performed at almost any stage of pregnancy, up to 7 - 8 months, although it is better (and easier) to preg scan earlier than later. A non-pregnant cow can be accurately diagnosed 'empty' as early as five weeks from being with the bull. Preg scanning can be very effective in identifying early/late calving cows. This needs to be performed during early pregnancy i.e., five to 10 weeks after the bull has been removed.
With reasonable handling facilities and sufficient labour keeping the cows coming forward, upwards of 150-200 cows per hour can be preg tested.
On larger cattle stations where large numbers of cows need to be processed quickly and efficiently we are able to provide two experienced operators who will preg test in excess of 2000 - 3000 head per day. Their experience has been gained by scanning thousands of cows on a regular basis.
